Far North Geopark Earth Mind Geotour – Durness

This Earth Mind Geotour is aimed at those interested in exploring new aspects of themselves alongside the ancient rocks and impressive landscapes of the far north of Scotland. It will suit those who have attended a previous Earth Mind Geotour or who simply want to know more of this furthest edge of the British mainland.

Surrounded by towering mountains, cliffs and pristine beaches we will encounter the vestiges of early life on Earth, get close to spectacular landforms, and take time to consider how these discoveries might help us think about the passage of time in our own lives and what this means for where we are in the present. You will learn about the history of this magnificent landscape, and the processes that have shaped it, and how these might offer you a new way to relate to the land, as well as to yourself.

The geotour is facilitated with activities throughout, but our approach is to support and encourage you to think about what we are seeing and what it means for you. There will be plenty of time as a group, but you will also have time to spend in personal reflection and solitude, which means you can take what you need from the geotour at your own pace.

Based in Durness, the trip commences with an introduction on the Monday evening and then continues over the next three days at a variety of stunning locations, including Smoo Cave, Balnakeil Bay and Loch Eriboll with its expansive, wide-open vistas of the northern interior. Throughout, we will have time to soak in the landscape, chat together, enjoy a coffee or simply take contemplative time alone. If you have any questions about accessibility please let us know prior to booking and we will happily discuss the terrain with you.

Most of the localities to visit are close to Durness and possibly even within walking distance. You don’t have to have a car with you as we will operate some car sharing as necessary.

Accommodation and meals are not included. Durness is a small community on the north coast of the Highlands of Scotland. It has limited accommodations so it is suggested that availability is explored before a place is booked on the geotour. Locally there is Self Catering, Guest Houses, YHA and also a campsite.

There is a wider range of similar accommodation if travel on a daily basis is contemplated from other communities within an easy drive. Should you wish to share a self catering property then the Geopark can put you in contact with others who are considering that possibility. Aiden House is currently the only Geopark Ambassador offering accommodation in the area.
