Lino printing: Helen will guide you through the creation of a piece which conveys a ‘sense of place’ inspired by the local area of Kinlochbervie. The subject of the pieces could be anything with a local connection; perhaps a prominent landmark, wildlife, or buildings – or even a collage of several features. Focussing on lino printing techniques such as mark making and carving styles to produce a black and white final print up to A4 size. As we will have just a few hours it would be best if you have an idea for a piece in mind before the workshop. Photos/images can be emailed to fiona@nwhgeopark.com which we can print in advance and use to work from on the day.

About Helen Macdonald: Since studying at Cumbria Institute of the Arts, life has taken me in various directions with a move to the far Northwest Highlands in 2015. Living in this stunning area has rekindled my passion to create and has inspired me to venture into a much wider variety of techniques and mediums. My subject matter is nature; I strive to convey the place I live by using vibrant colours, mixed mediums, and textiles in my art. Whether seascape or shell, animal or land, the dynamic and beautiful environment fuels my need to create. In recent years I have been developing my skills and styles with lino printing. Initially I spent many hours practicing the basics and have since built upon this through various short classes and longer courses which have opened many new avenues and enabled me to create more intricate pieces. Now, I can create using various techniques such as reduction, jigsaw, and multi-block lino, and am sure I will continue to enjoy developing my work and broadening my horizons.

Landscape painting: Focusing on the themes emerging from the Geopark’s Sense of Place events, painter Lorna Thompson will lead a workshop to create your own artwork inspired by the colours of the local landscape and symbolic images of the area. We’ll be using acrylic paint on small wooden panels.

About Lorna Thompson: North West Highland life has opened up a whole new vista of artistic possibilities for Lorna, who moved to Oldshoremore from Deeside, Aberdeenshire, in January. Working primarily in oils, Lorna paints both landscapes and more abstract images of patterns to be found in the natural features within the landscape, in rocks or trees for example. Full-time journalist Lorna says: “Painting is my way of getting to know a place and to deepen my connection with that environment. It is also a simple personal expression of appreciation and wonder for scenes in nature which strike a chord with me in some way. I’m enjoying exploring my new surroundings both on foot and with paint and brushes. The constant sky drama, the wide openness, the forms of the mountain backdrop and the elemental nature of the place offer inspiration that will never run dry. Ultimately, painting helps me to feel I belong where I am.”

This workshop is part of a series being delivered across the North West Highlands Geopark and its Gateway areas. They are part of the Artist in Residence Project from the Access, Connect and Take Part in the Geopark Programme, working with artists resident in the area to engage communities with the landscape through the creative process. Funded by the Kinlochbervie Community Benefit Fund and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
