Hidden Inside the Highlands: How Scottish caves are explored
By Alan L. Jeffreys, Grampian Speleological Group (2023)
Scotland’s literature is full of tales of caves used as hideouts, for illicit stills or the abodes of saints and robbers. Many of these are located along craggy shorelines or other obscure locations. Less familiar to many are natural cave systems formed in mountain limestone, which do exist amongst Scotland’s stunning highland scenery if you know where to look.
This book attempts to portray what these caverns are like, allied to an explanation of cave exploration for readers who do not necessarily wish to subject themselves to the stated discomforts, but nevertheless are interested in learning what it is all about.
Alan Jeffreys is an Edinburgh-based potholer who has pursued the exploration of caves for over 60 years. He has personally discovered and explored many caves in Scotland. In this book, the author shares his experiences to tell the story of the exploration of Scottish caves, describing the thrill of discovery and adventure, and details how one can go about joining in a safe manner.
